With Headquarters at Barrackpore in the district of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission is a charitable and philanthropic society registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961, recognised and aided by both the State and the Central Governments.. It is at a distance of 25 km. from the city of Kolkata, has 23 centers in five states of the Country and also one in the United Kingdom. It has been serving as a vehicle to propagate and practice the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The great patriot monk realized that education can eradicate the destitution of the masses. He spoke, �Education, education, education alone! Travelling through many cities of Europe and observing in them the comforts and education of even the poor people, there was brought to my mind the state of our own poor people, and I used to shed tears. What made the difference? Education was the answer I got.� Accordingly the Mission has established a number of schools upto Secondary standard, a B.Ed. College and a Degree College with Honours and General subjects.
The 23 centers, with excellent infrastructures are engaged in different educational and social welfare activities. Some of the activities are as follows :
School up to secondary level for more than 7000 students
Welfare homes for destitute children, deaf and dumb and/or blind girls
Welfare homes for senior citizens
Residential vocational training cum production centers
Medical services with charitable dispensaries, hospitals and training center for nurses
Provision for supply of drinking water to areas of water scarcity
Dairy, poultry, goatery and agricultural farming
Fisheries
Printing press for publication of books of general nature and of religious interest
A large public library
Education and medical care for street children
The Mission has received numerous national and other awards for its outstanding welfare activities.
1984: National Award by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Dept. of Woman & Child Development, Govt. of India.
1992: Swanayak Vivekananda Epic Award by India Epic Culture Center, Kolkata.
1992: Best employer of the physically handicapped award by Directorate of Social Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal.
1998: Jal Modi Award by Rotary Club of Kolkata for outstanding Social Service to the Society.
1999: Recognised by the Govt. of West Bengal as a State Resource Center on Visual Disability under the National Programme For Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability.
2000: National Award by the Ministry of Social Welfare.
2002: National Award by the Dept. of Woman & Child Development, Govt. of India.
2003: Hon'ble President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam visited the Mission and gifted his two months' salary for welfare activities.
Accountability of RKVM:
The RKV Mission is a reputed registered organization and working in the Field of Social Welfare since 1976. In recognition to the commendable services rendered by the Mission in the field of Women and Child Development, the Govt. of India has honoured the Mission thrice with Prestigious National Award in the years 1983, 1992 and 2003.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India, also being pleased to see the activities of the Mission during his visit to this Mission on 21.01.2003 donated Rs.1 lakh comprising his two months salary towards activities of the Mission.
Every year Accounts of the whole organization is audited by the certified Chartered Accountant, Official receipt is sent to every donor against his/her contribution with a covering letter. The Mission sends progress report to the donor at the end of every year in respect of the project maintained by the concerned donor. Moreover, the Mission keeps regular touch with the well-wishers/donors through e-mail. Donors are always welcome to visit the Mission and see the activities in person. It is matter of great privilege for the Mission to arrange food and lodging of the visitors/donors.
